"As I sort through my wood to find the perfect piece for a handle, I am amazed at the amount of quality material that has come from you, especially in my [native] Australian timbers. I just wanted to thank you for that contribution to my efforts. Also, yours is the only wood that is consistently dry, flat, and well prepared, and that saves me loads of time!"

Wood Reference Guide
Pterocarpus macrocarpus
[Amboyna,
Rosewood, Amboyna Burl, Pradoo, Mai Pradoo,
Burma Padauk, Asian Rosewood, Burmese Rosewood,
Rosewood Burl, Pradoo Burl, Lions Blood, Dragons
Blood, Pradu]
P. macrocarpus is an exceptionally fine
wood that comes from the mixed deciduous forests
of upper Burma (Myanmar) and the immediate
surrounding areas only. It is known as rosewood, or Burmese
rosewood, throughout Southeast Asia.
P. macrocarpus is from the Tribe Dalbergieae
- where the rosewoods come from. It is similar
in appearance to Narra,
P. indicus - which is indigenous to most
parts of SE Asia and more yellow in color than
red - and Andaman padauk, P. dalbergioides -
indigenous to the Andaman Islands only and more
orange in color. P. macrocarpus is quite
a bit harder wood than either P. indicus or P. dalbergioides
with a [12%] moisture content specific
gravity of [.86] rather than [.67] or [.72] for
the others.
The rare burl of P. macrocarpus is
referred to as amboyna. Amboyna burl is highly
sought after by woodworkers worldwide because of
its striking beauty as well as desirable
physical qualities. The wood is quite hard,
machines well, and takes a good polish. It is
wood well suited to be used for your finest knife handles
and custom pens.
